چکیده

A number of experiments have reported that neurons in primary visual cortex can adapt in a stimulus-dependent manner. Synaptic depression is a plausible mechanism for this type of adaptation because its synapse speci"city allows modi"cation of particular inputs while allowing others to remain una!ected. Furthermore, a form of synaptic depression measured in slice experiments sets in and recovers over appropriate time scales to account for such an e!ect. We show that synaptic depression on feedforward, but not on recurrent, inputs can produce a fast form of spatial-phase-speci"c adaptation in a complex cell model. ! 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Learning structure of sensory inputs with synaptic plasticity leads to interference

Synaptic plasticity is often explored as a form of unsupervised adaptation in cortical microcircuits to learn the structure of complex sensory inputs and thereby improve performance of classification and prediction. The question of whether the specific structure of the input patterns is encoded in the structure of neural networks has been largely neglected. Existing studies that have analyzed i...

Short-Term Depression at Thalamocortical Synapses Contributes to Rapid Adaptation of Cortical Sensory Responses In Vivo

In vivo whole-cell recordings revealed that during repeated stimulation, synaptic responses to deflection of facial whiskers rapidly adapt. Extracellular recordings in the somatosensory thalamus revealed that part of the adaptation occurs subcortically, but because cortical adaptation is stronger and recovers more slowly, cortical mechanisms must also contribute. Trains of sensory stimuli that ...

Stimulus-specific adaptation in a recurrent network model of primary auditory cortex

Stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) occurs when neurons decrease their responses to frequently-presented (standard) stimuli but not, or not as much, to other, rare (deviant) stimuli. SSA is present in all mammalian species in which it has been tested as well as in birds. SSA confers short-term memory to neuronal responses, and may lie upstream of the generation of mismatch negativity (MMN), an i...

Input-driven components of spike-frequency adaptation can be unmasked in vivo.

Spike-frequency adaptation affects the response characteristics of many sensory neurons, and different biophysical processes contribute to this phenomenon. Many cellular mechanisms underlying adaptation are triggered by the spike output of the neuron in a feedback manner (e.g., specific potassium currents that are primarily activated by the spiking activity). In contrast, other components of ad...

Contrast adaptation and infomax in visual cortical neurons.

In the primary visual cortex (V1) the contrast response function of many neurons saturates at high contrast and adapts depending on the visual stimulus. We propose that both effects - contrast saturation and adaptation - can be explained by a fast and a slow component in the synaptic dynamics. In our model the saturation is an effect of fast synaptic depression with a recovery time constant of ...
